During colonial times, British officials used the WRIT OF ASSISTANCE in order to search private homes for smuggled goods. The Writ of Assistance was a general search warrant which authorized custom officers to search for smuggled goods without specifying either the house or the goods. It was issued by superior provincial courts to implement trade and navigation laws.
