The Lapita may have come from Taiwan and migrated first to New Guinea, and then to other nearby islands. Several hundred years later, the Polynesians arrived, probably from the Malay Peninsula. They supplanted the Lapita civilization and continued exploring the Pacific region, including New Zealand.
