They were a common public place for men to gather and discuss political issues.

There were many taverns in each city and town in the colonies. The taverns were frequented by men and provided an environment for them to discuss the political issues taking place in the colonies. Most taverns attracted a certain group of men so the groups who would support revolutionary ideas would be together to discuss. Many of the leaders used the taverns to find support in particular the Sons of Liberty.
