first make the denominators the same. to do that take both the fractions and multiply then by the opposite denominator. so do 4/7*9/9 and then do 5/9*7/7 doing that you'll get 36/63 and 35/63 then add then to get 71/63. so your answer would be71/63 or 1 1/21.
