3(y + 4) - (x - 1)

x = 3

y = 2

First plug in the numbers into the variables. Or plug in 3 for "x" and 2 for "y" in the equation.

3(y + 4) - (x - 1)

3(2 + 4) - (3 - 1)    Simplify the numbers in the parentheses

3(6) - (2)

18 - 2 = 16

Put the values of x = 3 and y = 2 to the expression 3(y + 4) - (x - 1):

3(2 + 4) - (3 - 1) = 3(6) - (2) = 18 - 2 = 16
