The cotton gin affected urbanization through aiding in the process of removing seeds from cotton plants. During this time, the export of cotton was central to the North American economy. This large boom of machinery led to slavery becoming even more economically important as cotton picking labor leading to  an expansion of cotton mills and factories in urban areas.
