Segregation and mistreated are connected because being segregated is being mistreated. Segregation should have never happened!

Segregation is a form of discrimination (e.g racism, homophobia, transphobia, ect.) which of course are all forms of mistreatment. Segregation in particular is racist because it separates people and gives them different qualities of life in certain cultures according to the colour of their skin.
