There are several reasons, but I think the biggest one is to dismiss India's accomplishments without the British control and to say that, without English guardianship, they couldn't do anything. This feeling of anti-Indian was attached to the traditional idea of civilization and evangelization, as a way to convince those populations that the English way of life was the correct one.
