My assumption would be for religion to help them reach their destination safely AND to spread their region to other regions. This happened on the Silk Road trading routes, which helped spread the religions of Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. This also happened during the European colonization on South America, when Europeans spread Christianity while settling and colonizing Europe.
