What were some reasons the animals gave for not doing anything about the "Terrible Things?"

Answer: They didn't want to get involved or captured by the "Terrible Things" The rabbits would complain about the squirrels when they were taken like it was a good thing they were gone. They gave excuses for the fate of the animals. For example, when the birds were taken, they commented saying they were noisy anyways.
