After centuries of Muslim expansion, western European Christians created the Crusades. Their main goals were to halt Muslim state expansion, regain the Holy Land in the Middle East for Christianity, and retake lands that had previously been Christian. Many participants also felt that engaging in what they considered as holy war would provide them with redemption and atone for their sins.
