What is ironic about the statement that nothing was illegal since?

The statement "Nothing was illegal since" is ironic because in the past, there were no laws to serve as guidelines of what is "legal" and "illegal". Thus, one cannot say that nothing was illegal since. Also, there were no rules to follow and no one designated to judge a person based on his actions.
