The rise of labor unions helped to reshape relations between workers and their employers because workers were now entitled to more rights and had more of a say in seeking to improve their wages and working conditions. Relative to the government they were also able to demand more politically include benefits for workers and other regulations. Businesses have often actively fought to prevent unions from forming or from functioning because they wanted to prevent workers from gaining power.
