As the Civil War dragged on the North was in better shape to win in comparison with the South due to its ability to produce war goods on its own and was not dependent on other countries to produce weapons and ammunition. The North instituted a naval blockade in order to hurt the southern economy and also to prevent the sale of weapons to the Confederate Army.
