You would expect [tex]f[/tex] to be increasing to the left of [tex]x=a[/tex], and decreasing to the right, which corresponds to [tex]f'[/tex] being positive when [tex]x<a[/tex] (but near [tex]x=a[/tex]) and negative when [tex]x>a[/tex].
