Well the mainstream media can influence lives in many ways, it can provide lawful encouraging information about things that matter, but it can also tell you things that are incorrect such as sponsorship that is taken seriously, an example would be this: "The game GTA 5 is a terrible game for your children", that is obvious because the game is rated M and is not for children, and now Rockstar Studios got advertisement even though it is negative. :)
