The number is 21.  First you should divide 96 by 8 to find the 'product' that it talks about.  That number is 12.  So the product of 8 and 12 is 96.  But, then you have to find the difference between a number and nine that makes 12.  Easy!  Just add 9 and 12, and you get 21 as your answer!
