What was the initial reason for Columbus's journey to the New World

He was trying to get to Asia (specifically India) to find gold and spices. His expedition was funded by Spanish monarchs, who wanted the gold and spices to show off their wealth and status as a newly unified nation. Hope this helped, and let me know if you have any questions!! :)
