Imaginary lines that run north to south but measure east to west are called lines of longitude. These are geographic coordinates which determine a point on the Earth's surface. These points are usually measured in degrees and these measurements are important for mapping and for ocean navigation, which is relatively new as many seafarers in history had trouble determining longitudinal lines.
