How can you write the expression 3(17 – 5x) in words?

Thrice the difference of 17 and 5x.

Is how the above equation should be worded. This is to insure that there are two operations existing in the problem, multiplication and subtraction. 

Thrice = means three times (multiplication)
Difference of 17 and 5x = difference is the name of the answer derived in performing subtraction.

3(17 - 5x) can be expressed in words as the product of 3 and 5x less than 17.
