Nuclear deterrence is the idea that the threat of nuclear war was enough to stop an attack.
For example, Guam, South Korea, Japon, and USA as well - they have nuclear deterrence ready to go, just in case if North Korea, China, or Russia decided to attack them. So the Nuclear deterrence will stop the attack. (I am not sure how, but they know)
