EBCDIC (extended binary coded decimal interchange code) and ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) are coding methods that use one byte per character. EBCDIC is used on mainframe computers and high-capacity servers, while ASCII is used on most personal computers.
They both require eight bits for storage of each character.
