B^2 - 4AC = 4^2 - 4x (-1)x (-2) =
16 - 8 = 8

The formula is 

 b^2 – 4(a)(c) 

so

b^2 - 4(a)(c) = 4^2 - 4x (-1)x (-2) =
16 - 8 = 8
